How to Know It's Time for a New Job

Do you catch yourself wishing you were somewhere else while at work? Are you not interested in what you’re doing anymore? 


It can be difficult to tell whether you’re just going through a rough patch at work, or if you’re genuinely fed up and need something new. It’s also scary deciding to quit your job – especially if you don’t have anything else in the pipeline.


However, it’s important to take time to assess your situation and make that difficult decision. Leaving it too late can often have worse consequences. Not only on yourself, but your co-workers and even your loved ones.

You can’t get excited about work


You’re clashing more with your co-workers because you don’t share the same interests as them. Whilst they may be excited about the work that they're producing, you can’t relate. This negative energy will show.


Your bad vibes may even begin to cause friction in the office. Have you received any warnings about your behaviour? If so, it’s time to get out before you burn your bridges and chance of a recommendation.


Alternatively, if you work in customer service, customers may pick up on your bad mood and complain about you. Don’t leave it too late to quit - getting fired never looks good on a CV!

You’re bored and distracted at work


Along with arguing with co-workers, you’re not happy in yourself. You’re less productive, missing deadlines and generally unmotivated.


It’s likely that you’re not being mentally stimulated. If you’re also checking social media every ten minutes and find yourself taking Buzzfeed quizzes, something’s not right. Perhaps you’re even browsing other jobs while in the office?


While it’s normal to look forward to the weekend, you shouldn't be clock-watching throughout the day. Remember, your job should further you as a person – not bore you to death.


You’re not progressing


Have you been in the same role for what seems like forever? Without a pay rise, or even a pay review? Have you not been given more responsibility? If you’ve taken all the necessary steps to further yourself, without any results, it can be incredibly disheartening.


What’s more, your employer can’t complain about you leaving them if they don’t provide adequate opportunities to further your career. It’s totally fair if you take a step back to focus on your personal development.


The environment is toxic


A toxic work environment can quickly kill any feelings of loyalty towards your employer. Your successes and joys will be tainted if the office dynamics are off-kilter. Question whether your boss and colleagues take the time to celebrate the wins. Or do they treat their staff as disposable?


Also, do you share the same vision as your organisation? It’s impossible to thrive if you don’t believe in what you’re putting out in the world. Do you consciously oppose the ethos of your company? This is definitely a sign to move on.

You’re not healthy


Constant stress and feelings of discontent will play on your mind and keep you up at night. This general exhaustion will inevitably lead to illness, causing you to feel even more run-down. If this sounds like you, know that it’s not sustainable.


Poor physical health can also be a reflection of poor mental health. Perhaps you’ve adopted bad habits recently. Over or under-eating, smoking and excessive drinking can all be signs that you’re suffering. Keep an eye on your health as an indicator of your happiness.


You’re irritable


What’s the first thing that you do when you get home? Do you immediately seek the nearest person available who’ll listen to your grievances from work? As much as you want to complain, this ritual can become wearing.


Having a lack of control over your career not only affects you, but your loved ones too. We spend most of our week at work and it inevitably affects our day-to-day mood. If you’re finding that your social life is suffering as a result, it could be time to shake up your career.


Time for a new job?


If you recognise any of these signs, then it’s time to make a change. Sometimes, just making the decision to quit can take a huge weight off your chest. However, don’t act too rashly. Being unemployed for an extended period can cause even more stress.


Before quitting, try and have a plan in place for your next career move. This will give you something to focus on and get excited about. Start thinking about your ideal job. Is location an important factor, are you tired of a long commute? Do you need flexibility in your role, want more responsibility or to work in a bigger team? Make notes of what you loved and hated about your job and ensure your next role ticks certain boxes. Although there are a lot of unknowns in moving jobs, being happy in your every day life is important and changing roles may be the best decision you’ve ever made!
