How to ask someone out in English

One of the benefits of studying abroad is getting to meet new people. You may even meet someone who you would like to ask out on a date.

Here are some key phrases and tips on how to ask someone out in English.

Conversation Starters

Conversation starters are also known as “icebreakers”. They help you to approach the person you would like to spend time with. These are similar to conversation starters you would use when you first meet a classmate or new friend.

Hi, I’m …….

Hi, what’s your name?

It’s nice to meet you.

You look great

I like your dance moves

Would you like a drink?

Would you like to join us?

Asking to see someone again

These phrases can help you take the next step and see the person again. Use the conditional tense for most of them, as it is the most polite in this instance. You don't want to come across as too pushy!

Can I have your number?

Here is my number….

Are you on Facebook?

Would you like to meet again?

Would you like to get a cup of tea with me? (This will work really well in the UK!)

Do you want to see a film together?

Fancy a drink sometime?

Meeting your date

This is a good time to use complimentary adjectives!

How are you?

How was your day?

You look nice

You look lovely

Your outfit is great

It’s good to see you!

On the date

Ask more questions that will help you get to know your date. These phrases are good as they start a topic for discussion!

What is your favorite film?

What kind of music do you listen to?

Where do you want to travel to?

How many brothers and sisters do you have?

What kind of foods do you like?

Do you play any sport?

At the end of the date

Remember to thank your date for a nice evening. If you would like to see them again, use the conditional tense to ask them.

Would you like to do this again?

Can I walk you home?

I had a great time

I would like to see you again

I will call you
